The Montgomerie Course becomes the third championship layout at Celtic Manor following. The course has been built with the latest cutting edge technology but the designer has maintained true to his roots in Scottish links golf with many of its finishing touches.
Deep pot bunkers have been added to give the course a links-like feel and the fairways have been shaped and cut in a traditional manner to offer a contrast to the snaking lines and diamond patterns of the fairways on the other two courses.
“My design will provide a different challenge to the other two courses at The Celtic Manor Resort,” said the eight-time European No 1.
“I’m more a pot bunker fan than the big wide areas of sand that you see on many modern golf courses.
“They might look spectacular, but they’re not really a penalty – particularly to the better players. They would far rather be in those bunkers than in the rough, something which I think is fundamentally wrong.
“A bunker should be a half-shot penalty, so I’ve made the bunkers smaller and very much deeper than you will see on most new layouts. I believe you should have to plot your way around them like a game of chess.”

Montgomerie has designed a number of highly acclaimed courses all over the world, from his native Scotland to Dubai and from Ireland to China, but this is his first project in England and Wales.
His design at Celtic Manor will stretch to 6,371 yards and play to a highly testing par of 69. With some spectacular tee shots and dramatic descents, the course will provide a rewarding challenge for all standards of golfer. |
