Rowallan Castle, Scotland

Rowallan Castle Golf Course is a Colin Montgomerie signature course located near Kilmarnock, 30 minutes drive south west of Glasgow. It is set within one of Scotland’s finest country estates, complete with 1000-year-old yew trees, trout streams, two spectacular castles, and stunning views to Ailsa Craig and Arran in the Firth of Clyde. The golf course will be Colin's first to be built in his homeland and will be a fine addition to the impressive portfolio of courses he has created.

Opened in 2010 the course was primarily designed as a private members course, although there's still enough of a test for the professional golfer as well, if required. The course measures 7000 yards from the back tees, with a par of 71, but with a good variety of hole lengths and plenty of teeing area the course won't feel desperately long for the average player. There are even a couple of very short par 4's which, although offering the opportunity for birdies, have the potential for some very high scores indeed. Colin Montgomerie's trademark deep bunkering will certainly be a hazard worth avoiding while the undulating greens will test even the best putters.

Much of the site was designated as Historic Landscape so a highly sensitive approach to the golf course design was adopted to ensure that it blended sympathetically with its surroundings. By using a traditional design style with little earth movement and concentrating much of the feature shaping on green complexes and bunker formations a visually appealing and challenging golf course has been created which responds to the wonderful setting.

Unusually the golf course boasts a par 3 19th hole, played alongside the 'New' castle. Described as the 'Money Hole' this is where any halved matches can be settled right next to the more traditional'19th hole'.
