Colin Mongomerie was at Dukes Meadows Golf Course in Chiswick on Monday 11 February to launch the 2008 HSBC Wee Wonders Championships. Ten young golfers spent the day with Colin, during which he gave them some invaluable advice, a coaching clinic and then joined them for a round of golf on the 9 hole par 3 course.
“I get a fantastic amount of enjoyment out of working with these kids and it comes from having three of my own at a similar age. It’s great to see some of these children hitting the ball so far and having the right technique because they are the future of this wonderful game”.
Montgomerie has been a keen supporter of the Championships since 2005 and has hosted HSBC Wee Wonders golf days at Northwick Park and Wentworth, as well as joining the Grand Finalists at St Andrews last year. “It’s fantastic that HSBC are giving children the opportunity to play the game all over the UK – without being given the opportunity no-one would know how good they were. I was 14 when I first broke 100 on the golf course – some of these kids are doing it at 8 and 9, and it’s great to see”
Dukes Meadows Golf Course was chosen to host the day as it is a great example of a local community facility which is so important for grassroots golf development. Over 100 venues across the UK and Ireland have volunteered to host a local qualifying event, at which junior golfers of all standards can play with others their own age in a fun environment that also helps to instil life lessons such as fair play, integrity, honesty and sportsmanship.
The HSBC Wee Wonders Championships for 5 to 12 year old boys and girls is supporting the next generation of golfers by giving them the opportunity to play without the need for handicaps or membership at a golf club. The Championships continue to lead the way in grassroots golf, attracting thousands aspiring golfers each year to enjoy the challenges and thrills of competitive golf. |
