Despite not playing tournament golf the past few weeks I’ve been quite busy as well as enjoying time with my family.
Yesterday, Monday, I was with my design team at European Golf Design, going through the projects we are currently working on, in particular Palm City, a new golf resort in Denmark. My golf course design business is very important to me and I enjoy it a great deal.
A couple of weeks ago I made my first visit as Ryder Cup Captain, down to Celtic Manor. We looked at every aspect trying to find the best way to make my Team feel as comfortable as possible here. We looked at the prospective Team Rooms and Locker Rooms as well as the hotel, the clubhouse and the course, but we also looked into the clothing, golf bags, food and beverages…..everything. A large part of the day was spent walking the golf course and discussing the various set up options with Jim McKenzie, Golf Course and Estates Manager at The Celtic Manor Resort; Ross McMurray of European Golf Design, who designed the course; David Garland and Richard Hills from the European Tour.
The views of the course are absolutely fantastic – amazing – the best view ever at a Ryder Cup venue, it is going to be some sight once 45,000 spectators are on the cousre, it will be some sight – it will be one of the best views in golf.
One thing I now really appreciate is the fact that there is an awful lot more involved behind the scenes for the Captain than I had given Captains credit for in the past and I respect them all a little bit more now even than I did before. In previous years, I have only been in front of the camera at The Ryder Cup so to speak, so it is very interesting to see what goes on behind it.
It promises to be a very exciting eighteen months.
