Scots win world crown

Monty and Warren hold off US challenge in China

Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren held their nerve to secure Scotland's first World Cup victory in China on Sunday.

The duo edged out Americans Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum on the third play-off hole at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen to make up for last year's disappointment.

Germany's Bernhard Langer and Marcel Siem won the title in a play-off last year, but this time it was the US who were made to pay after forcing the sudden death format on the last regulation hole.

Drama

Slocum had sunk the crucial five-foot birdie on the 18th, and then had the chance to win it on the first play-off hole.

But Warren saved par under pressure from 12 feet and the American then missed his seven-foot attempt for birdie and the victory.

Weekley and Warren both went close with birdie attempts from distance on the second play-off hole before the tie was settled.

A short approach shot from Weekley and Slocum's chip on the final play-off hole left the Americans with a tough 15-foot putt for par.

Weekley missed the chance and Scotland made no mistake to take victory in the foursomes and the tournament.

Standings

Scotland shot a six-under par 66 in regulation on the final round to leave them 25-under 263, whilst overnight leaders the United States shot 67.

French pair Gregory Havret and Raphael Jacquelin carded a 67 to finish one behind the two leaders, alongside pre-tournament favourites Ian Poulter and Justin Rose for whom a 67 saw England finish two off the pace.

South Africa finished four back after a 69, with Germany, Argentina, Sweden and the Netherlands all five behind.
