Oct 12, 2009: Opposing Ryder Cup Captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin will play an exhibition match today on The Twenty Ten Course at The Celtic Manor Resort, City of Newport, as part of the celebrations to mark the’ Year to Go’ before The 2010 Ryder Cup takes place in Wales.
European Captain Montgomerie will be partner BBC Radio 2’s Chris Evans with Welsh Opera star Bryn Terfel playing alongside the US Captain Pavin for nine holes of greensomes over the Twenty Ten Course – the first course built specifically to host The Ryder Cup.
And following the four celebrities every step of the way, invited guests from the worlds of hospitality and media will join Ryder Cup Partners and Sponsors in walking the fairways of the course which will bring the contest to life from October 1-3, 2010.
The exhibition match will also feature on-course commentary from Sky Television’s Richard Boxall before the two Captains hold a joint press conference for the assembled regional, national and international media.
Montgomerie said: “With The Ryder Cup now just under a year away and the points race well underway, I think I speak on behalf of everyone involved in this terrific event when I say that the sense of excitement is really starting to build.
“The countdown to The 2010 Ryder Cup now starts in earnest, and the Year to Go exhibition match and Gala Dinner should help build that excitement even further, as well as providing a lot of fun not just for myself, Corey and our playing partners, but also for the many people attending.”
Pavin said: “I’ve been thinking about The Ryder Cup almost non-stop since I was appointed Captain. Playing in the Wales Open on The Twenty Ten Course helped me understand the golf course better and returning this month to finalise my team’s needs at Celtic Manor will be very important as well.”
